Navigating Summer Holidays
Summer carries a different kind of energy.
Longer days. Louder celebrations. Community gatherings. Holidays like Pentecost or Juneteenth can fill the calendar with events, ceremonies, and social expectations. And while some of these moments are meaningful, others have felt complicated for me.
There was a time when I showed up out of pressure — not peace.
For three decades, I was not allowed to celebrate any holidays. Once I left, I was free to take part in these rituals that didn't feel meaningful to me. I chose to participate because I had the freedom to choose. I convinced myself that feeling uncomfortable was simply part of fitting in.
But healing has taught me something powerful:
Belonging should not require self-abandonment.
This month, I’m reflecting on freedom — not just external freedom, but internal freedom. The freedom to choose what aligns with my values. The freedom to step away from what doesn’t.
Two affirmations are guiding me through this season:
Affirmation to Release: "I release the need to participate in rituals that do not resonate with me.”
It used to feel rebellious to opt out. I worried about being misunderstood. I worried about being labeled difficult, distant, or ungrateful.
But honoring my boundaries is not rejection — it’s self-respect.
I am allowed to say no to gatherings that drain me. I am allowed to question traditions that feel performative. I am allowed to trust the quiet voice inside me that says, “This doesn’t feel right.”
Releasing the need to participate is empowering. It reminds me that I no longer move out of fear of exclusion. I move from alignment.
Affirmation to Receive: "I receive freedom to create new traditions with my tribe.”
Freedom isn’t just about what I leave behind — it’s about what I build in its place.
This month, I’m leaning into the people who feel safe. My tribe. The friends and chosen family who respect my healing and celebrate my growth.
Instead of participating out of obligation, I’m creating new rituals that feel authentic. Maybe it’s a small gathering with honest conversation. Maybe it’s volunteering for a cause that reflects my values. Maybe it’s something simple — like a shared meal where laughter replaces tension.
Each new tradition is a declaration:
I get to define my life. I get to shape my community. I get to celebrate in ways that feel nourishing.
Summer is often associated with freedom — and this year, I’m claiming it in a deeper way. Not just freedom from old systems, but freedom within myself.
If summer holidays bring up mixed emotions for you, know this:
You are not required to participate in anything that compromises your healing. You are allowed to build new traditions that reflect who you are becoming. You are allowed to choose your tribe and celebrate on your own terms.
We were once pressured to conform. Now we are choosing to align.
Free. Grounded. Still shining. ☀️
